There has been a ton of bad press about pit bulls lately, but don’t listen! Any dog can bite you, and the chances are more likely that you will get bit by a chihuahua than by a pit bull.
This particular pit bull is about 35-40 pounds, and she wont get much bigger than that. She walks excellent on the leash, and she is very calm. Give a pit a chance!

This sweet girl is available for adoption at Coachella Valley Animal Campus. She is a shar-pei mix and weighs about 30 pounds. She might not look like the prettiest dog, but she has the best personality! She has very soft fur, and her shedding is minimal. Check her out at www.rcdas.org, her number is 772219.

The twist

When I started the clothing business I knew I wanted to work part time while the business was trying to take off. I knew it would be hard to find a job in this economy, but this letter is really laughable.

My college degree is in ANIMAL HEALTH SCIENCE, and the job title is ANIMAL HEALTH INVESTIGATOR!

There is really no other explanation for the fact that I can’t get a job, even in my field of study, thann God. He obviously has a plan for my life, and He is definitely teaching me that the animal field is not where I  am supposed to be at the moment.

I have recently been offered a “job” with YouthHope to be the fundraising coordinator. My mother-in-law, Heidi, started this organization in July of last year to help the homeless youth in Redlands. She started it because she has a heart for these kids and she really wants to see them get off the street, and show them that people do care. She was never a business owner, or a counselor, or a non-profit administrator, but she started YouthHope anyway. She trusted that God would show her what to do and let her know what she needed to say, and He hasn’t let her down. In fact the organization is becoming quite successful, and she is getting kids off the streets.

Now, Heidi is offering someone with no experience in fundraising, a job as a fundraising coordinator! Where no other company has seen the potential in me, Heidi has. She thinks I would be great at this, and it really does sound like something I would love to try. So I’m going to try.

So much for that degree in animal health science…but I still love the animals so you all better still adopt from your local shelter!

Back to the Shelter

I decided to volunteer at the animal shelter where I used to work, Coachella Valley Animal Campus. I’ve been gone from there for about 6 months now and it feels like I never left. I mentioned this fact to my boss and she was worried that I felt the same amount of stress, and it’s not that. It’s that the people there feel like my family and they welcome me back with open arms whenever I come in, even as a volunteer. It is truly a rewarding experience to go and volunteer at an animal shelter. The animals are so appreciative for any attention they can get. I was only able to walk 3 dogs yesterday because I took each of them out and played fetch, and tag, and took them for a long walk, and gave each of them some snuggle time. They were so happy to be getting some love, and that’s all any of can do sometimes. I realized that I may not be able to save the lives of as many animals as I would like but I can give them as much love in their short lives as I possibly can. I hope more people will join me in helping to give back to the animals that make such a big difference in a lot of our lives. If anyone would like to volunteer for riverside county animals services check out www.rcdas.org or you can find a local rescue that might need some help. Whatever help you can give is truly appreciated by the shelter workers and of course the animals.

Birthday Time!

What a great birthday! It was my 27th today and I got to spend the entire day with my hubby. He surprised me by taking the day off and taking me to my favorite place…Disneyland! I love going to Disneyland on my birthday because I get to pick the rides, and I usually tend to stick to the kiddie rides. It makes me feel like a kid again:) My absolute favorite ride at Disneyland is Peter Pan. I love that you fly through the nighttime sky of London, and then enter into the fantasyland that is never never land. Jason is so wonderful about my obsession with the old school rides, and he just smiles and listens as I go on and on about all the things I love about them.

After a full day at Disneyland who doesn’t need a big dinner? Jason also let me pick where we ate tonight, and I picked good this time:) We went to the Jazz Kitchen at downtown disney and it was delish! I ended up with two desserts, and I didn’t let myself feel bad about it! It’s my birthday, I get to indulge. Great company and great conversation. Oh I love my hubby!

It was a year of being a kid again, and enjoying the small things about birthdays. I wanted to have a girls only sleepover on Friday, and once again Jason was wonderful and let me have my way. He went camping with Curtis while I had the girls over. I think the girls need to get together more often than once a year. We need the girl talk, and the silliness that goes along with that. We talked, and played games, it was the perfect girls night! All of my girlies have such wonderful and unique qualities, and I’m glad that I get to have each one of them in my life.

Not only did I get to spend quality time with the girls and my hubby, but I got to spend some quality time with my parents and sisters. My mom and Gabs, and Heidi and Bernie joined us for church and sushi on Sunday. My dad and Megan came to visit and bring me yummy perfume on Sunday too. The entire weekend was filled with little visits, and little surprises. Jason got me guitar lessons because learning to play guitar is on my bucket list, and he wanted to help me check off some items on that list:) We are going to take the lessons together and I think it will be so fun to learn it together and share it when we get home.  Dander and grandmom left wonderful surprises on my doorstep today. It was just a weekend filled with people who love me, and who wanted to wish me a happy birthday.

I think it is so easy to get wrapped up in your iphone or blackberry and forget to just enjoy the moment and the people you are sharing that moment with. My goal this year is to enjoy every moment as it is happening. I want to try and remember all of the small things that make life so enjoyable.

Thanks everyone for making my birthday such a good one! I love you all so much!

The Basics

theretreatclothing:

The first step in creating a fabulous wardrobe is to start with the basics. The basics in my closet are usually in black, white, tan, and brown. For now we are just discussing clothing, but don’t worry you shoe fanatics, we will get there. Here are 10 basics that have made my wardrobe successful:

1. Plain T-shirts: I like mine in black or white, and I tend to by v-neck because it is very flattering for those of us with a small chest size. T-shirts come in fitted or loose, loose being what’s in style right now.

2. Ribbed Tanks or Spaghetti Strap tanks: Once again I usually stick to the basic colors, but I tend to buy one fun color like teal or hot pink.

3. A great pair of jeans: Now I know finding the perfect pair of jeans can give you nightmares, speaking from a woman who has short legs, and wide thighs. The things to remember here is that the jeans have to make your booty look good, be comfortable, and no muffin tops! You can always hem a pair of pants, and it is worth the extra money to do so.

4. Black skirt: Depending on if you are tall or short, and if you are girly or relaxed, will determine what kind of skirt you buy. A black skirt can be worn with just about any top, and no one will be able to tell that you have already worn the skirt a hundred times. Try on different lengths and styles. The pencil skirt has never gone out of style, and yes us bootylicious girls can pull off a pencil skirt.

5. Comfy Cardigan: Like most basics, I tend to stick with black on the cardigans, but here is where you can really branch out with some new colors. It is a good idea to have the classic short cardigan sweater, and a longer version. I like to have cardigans in colors such as purple and mustard, so try on a cardigan in your favorite color.

6.  Leggings and Tights: I know women of the 80’s will have a problem with the leggings, but that is why they make pretty tights. The leggings are best if they are a heavy material, do a check and make sure they are not see-through. The Retreat just got in some good ones and they run about $16 a pair and they will last a long time. You can find fun tights just about anywhere these days; Target and Forever 21 have a good selection.

7.  Black dress: I know you always read about the perfect black dress that lasts a lifetime, but I have still yet to find my perfect one. The fashions change so much each year that I could not possibly stick to only one black dress! A black dress is a must though. Move around in the dress, sit down, and dance around a little bit. That’s you would be doing if you bought the dress, so if it is comfortable and stays in place it’s a keeper.

8. Cute shorts: I know some of us absolutely dread trying on shorts, but they are an essential piece of any southern Californian’s wardrobe. When buying shorts make sure you use the same rules you used when buying jeans. They have to be comfortable, they have to make your booty look good, and once again no muffin tops! If you need a bigger size, get it. I know we have our limits on what sizes we will wear, but you will be thankful you bought that next size up (or down) when you are comfortable. Walk around in the shorts and make sure they fit your legs right and don’t ride up your thighs, I hear this complaint about shorts all the time. Be brave and take several different styles into the dressing room with you. You might be surprised at what fits best.

9. A Great Coat: During the winter months this may be the only piece of clothing you will see. Make sure it is fabulous. I like to have a black one and a white one. I also like to buy longer coats that have some fitting at the waist, so it looks like I’m wearing a cute dress when it’s really just my coat.  I have had my coats for many years now because I can wear them with so many different outfits. You can even buy some fun colors like plum or mustard.

10. A jacket: This is different from a coat, because you can wear it as part of an outfit, instead of covering up an outfit, as with a coat. A denim jacket is always a good choice. Denim jackets are being updated every year, so please don’t feel the need to break out the lacy hot-pink one from 1986. There are also bolero jackets that come in a variety of materials like cotton, or velvet. Once again, I like to stick with black on this because it can be worn multiple times. If you like color, go for it here!

These are 10 things that have made my life a little easier when it comes to putting together an outfit. You can pair these items with fun tops, and funky sweaters. Jackets can be worn with bright colored party dresses or with your jeans and a t-shirt. When trying on the basics, key things to remember are: make sure it is comfortable, and that it can be worn with many different pieces of clothing. When you are in your dressing room, mentally go through your wardrobe. If you can envision the basic you are trying on with different items you already own, you have found a keeper.

In the next blog we will start learning how to put outfits together using these basics.
